American Brokers

Being from Canada and not knowing a lot american brokers, who is the best broker and why would you suggest them? I'm not just saying that they need to be the most cost effective. I am looking for a broker that is always dependable, on time and one that never lets you down. Let me know your thoughts?

Funny you should ask, just so happens to be something near & dear to my heart :) ...
The term "broker" is interesting in itself because the best freight services for trade shows in the US would be done by booking on a dedicated truck or done what is done by the major van lines (United, Mayflower, Atlas, Allied, Bekins, etc). Companies that just do "logistics" or "brokerage" for trade shows are asking for trouble, they book based on the the "best" rate to many different carriers which loses control and dependability of the shipment.
I'm part of a company called Trade Show Transit, we specialize in Dedicated Truck Transport for trade shows and events, but are not a big name van line agent that charges the normal high prices associated with these big name companies. Our success rate for dedicated truck services is BETTER than 99.5% - which is nothing to sneeze at! We understand target move-ins, marshalling yards, advanced warehouses, required weight tickets, and the many nuances of shipping to a show. But, we also handle international, Air Forwarding, Express Cargo, and general brokerage/logistics when needed for budget purposes) for trade shows and events as well, but all of our services are again at a much better price than the big name van line companies.
For example, we can supply you with the Driver Name and Cell number on our dedicated truck services should you want to maintain contact for delivery scheduling, plus we are able to track shipments through real-time, GPS technology.
So, I recommend staying away from "Logistics" companies...even if they are "trade show" related companies/organizations and recommend sticking with people that can/will provide you dedicated truck service.

Also I always thought that a dedicated truck was more expensive then piggy backing on another truck. Is this a age old myth?

-In regards to the GPS System, the driver/truck/trailer are automatically assigned to track on our internal online system via GPS technology once the truck picks up the shipment (we are an agent of Landstar, this is through our Landstar booking system). We can see the exact location on a map as well as the exact progress traveled for the shipment (we can even make sure a driver is on the proper route, or has taken the proper route)...all part of information viewed on the system for a particular shipment.
This not only allows us to make sure our trade show shipments are meeting target move-ins (or target move-outs) dates/times, it's a great item for theft recovery too! Should someone steal a trailer (God forbid), it can be tracked in a instant because our GPS systems are mounted on the trailer whereas most freight companies that may utilize GPS tracking mount on the tractors only - which doesn't do any good if the driver unhitches or if someone should steal the trailer. Plus, it not in an easy location to detect, remove, or cover...and it's a highly advanced GPS system that even works in covered locations (don't ask me how, I just know that's what they tell me!!)

Not always true, can vary from carrier to carrier...and on different situations, let me give you a quick example on our dedicated/exclusive truck rates.
-We can currently run our Dedicated Trucks (53' trailer, Air Ride - best type of trailer, especially for sensitive electronics and specialty equipment), from Cleveland to Chicago for $700 which includes fuel surcharges, certified weight ticket, up to 30,000 pds and all accessory charges outside of wait time if going direct to show hall.
I just ran an online quote for Overnite (no longer Overnite so I can use their name :) ) - they are just about $1,700 for a 9,000 pd trade show shipment from Cleveland to Chicago, which includes a 68% discount off of their published rates! And again, this is a common carrier service which uses spring load trailers...who will route through terminals where freight is off loaded/reloaded (where most damage occurs), and has minimal insurance included in their rate. Our shipment services are quite the opposite and more than 50% off of this common carrier rate. Are we always less than common carriers? No...but our service is 100 times better (better drivers, better equipment, more accurate, more dependable, exclusive truck service, higher success rate against damage/claims/missed delivery times, higher insurance included with base rate, etc).
It would take me too long to outline the details of why we can give such good rates...but would be more than happy to do it over the phone sometime.
