Is The Wood You Use In Your Custom Exhibits Green?

Is This Tree Green?

In our first article we looked at the issue of eco-sensitive products in the trade show/exhibit industry.  For our next series of articles we will look at individual materials and what you should consider when discussing them with your clients and your team members.

First off we will start off with the issue of wood that is used in custom exhibits.  What makes it a green product?

So what does it take to make wood certified green?  Well, all wood that is "FSC certified green" contains wood from FSC certified forests, controlled sources, or material that is 100% post consumer reclaimed or recycled.  FSC certified forests protect endangered species and wildlife habitat, ensure clean water by respecting rivers and waterways, are not planted with genetically modified trees and are not converted into plantations.  To become certified, companies must also involve local communities and aboriginal communities in the development of forest management plans, and respect their rights and beliefs.  FSC is the only forest certification standard supported by eco organizations such as the Sierra club, Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund.

FSC also certifies the recycled content of wood products.  The recycled/post consumer waste content for FSC wood is verified, guaranteeing that it has come from recycled resources.  FSC wood cannot come from areas of social conflict or illegal logging, genetically modified trees, high conservation value forests or large scale conversion forests where natural species are replaced with fast growing trees.

Do you know where the wood materials you use in your exhibits come from?  Do you care?  Do your customers care?
